Raining on Prom Night? How to be Prepared

When it comes to prom night, the weather can have a habit of being unpredictable at best. A sudden downpour of rain can ruin a good look.

Water and makeup don’t mix well!

That being said, a rainy day doesn’t have to spell disaster for your evening, and there’s a lot you can do to prepare for whatever weather is out there during your prom.

Keeping Dry

First off, always check your local weather forecast to make sure there’s no rain.

Rain can appear very suddenly, so if you have a cell phone, look for an app from your local weather station if there’s one available. This way you can check it right before you leave to see if there’s a rainfall warning in effect.

If you drive, you can take a car to the prom instead of walking, saving you from the worst of any possible downpour.

A parent or friend might be able to take you, or if you’re looking for a more glamorous ride, book a limo rental for the evening so you can arrive at your school in style.

Take an umbrella with you in the trunk in case you need it, that way your hair and outfit won’t get wet.

When choosing a dress or tuxedo for the prom, look for darker colors that won’t show damp spots if there’s rain.

If you’re really set on brighter, lighter prom colors, look for fabric that won’t wrinkle so you can wear a raincoat over it without it getting messed up or squished.

This way you can just hang up the coat indoors and your clothes will be safe.

Talk to your school ahead of time to see if it would be possible to set up a coat rack for attendees to hang up their rain gear on if they need to, so you won’t be stuck carrying around a dripping-wet jacket instead of having a great time.

Taking Care of Makeup & Hair

Makeup can be tricky to maintain when it rains. Visit your local pharmacy’s cosmetics counter and talk to a staff member there about buying waterproof makeup, especially mascara, which has a bad habit of running down in thick black streaks if it doesn’t have a good resistance to liquid.

If you’re wearing a lot of makeup like foundation, concealer, eyeshadow or an eyebrow pencil, you can also use primer and setting spray to keep your makeup looking its best.

Primer is worn as a base and keeps your skin hydrated, and setting spray will seal your makeup temporarily against rain, sweat, sunlight and moisture.

If you’re an online shopper, check out websites like Amazon, MAC Cosmetics and Sephora to see if they have any upcoming deals on waterproof makeup or setting spray. Order it a month or so ahead of time so it will ship to you before prom night.

Isn’t it frustrating to get your hair styled just right for a big occasion, only to have the rain drag it down? Rain has an annoying habit of making hair go either very frizzy or completely flat, neither of which is a look to be with on prom night.

Don’t worry though, there’s a lot you can do to manage your hair when it rains to keep it looking great for your prom.

Use mousse and hairspray to keep it in shape. Be careful not to apply too much, otherwise, it will go stiff.

Your hairdresser can help you with using hair care products if it’s your first time, or you can find plenty of helpful online tutorials to show you how. Use clips, barrettes, bobby pins and hair scrunchies to keep your style secured, and if you’re a guy or you have really short hair, you can use hair gel to hold it in place.

Whether you choose to walk or drive to the prom, having an umbrella on-hand is great for keeping rain away from your hairdo.

Don’t forget about Shoes

Prom night is a time to break out the fancy shoes, but a deep puddle or a splash of mud on a rainy day can ruin even the best pair.

You can counteract this by choosing waterproof shoes, leather or vinyl heels to prevent damage from the rain.

Bring along a couple of wet wipes to get rid of any excess mud before you hit the dance floor.

If you have your heart set on bedazzled shoes with the glittering rhinestones or velvet slippers made of fabric, you can buy a cheap pair of plastic shoe protectors to wear outside, which slide over top with elastic bands.

You might feel a little silly at first, but you can take them off quickly once you get inside the doors, and your shoes will still look as amazing as when you first put them on. Just toss out the shoe protectors in a nearby garbage can before you go meet up with your friends.

Keep Time on your side

Arrive at the prom (if possible, consult the school faculty first!) a bit ahead of time so that if the rain does smudge your makeup, you can fix it in the bathroom mirror.

This will also give your clothes time to dry and give you more time to spend having fun with your friends.

Bring a little travel bag with you and keep your makeup supplies, a comb, hairspray, setting spray and cosmetic applicators with you so that you can fix your style if you get wet on the way there.

Prom night is no time to leave friends out in the cold!

Prom Transport

If you’re renting a limo or even just using a regular car, save your friends the walk to school by doing a carpool. It’s a lot more fun and exciting to be all together, anyway.

Just crank up the volume to your favorite song on the radio, bring some cans of soda, take selfies or talk about all the memories you’ve had together of school and what you think the future will bring.

It’s the last big, fun night you’ll be having together before school lets out for the year, so why not make the most of it?

Prom night is all about having fun, sharing nostalgic moments and creating a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Don’t let overcast skies or a rainy night get in the way of an incredible time that you’ll never forget!
